I begin by getting to know each young person; what they’re interested in, the kinds of stories they like reading, how they currently feel about writing and what might help them enjoy it even more. This helps me plan sessions that feel engaging, relevant and supportive from the very start.
I didn’t always love writing at school. It took a few key people along the way to help me see it differently, and that experience really shapes how I work now. I know how important it is for children and young adults to feel encouraged, understood and capable.
In our sessions, we might explore a range of forms depending on their interests and age group, from poetry and playwriting to fiction, essays and more. The focus is on building confidence, curiosity and nurturing their imagination, cultivating excitement for the potential writing can bring.
I also support students with exam preparation, including practice papers, exam technique, comprehension and close analysis of texts, as well as developing strong responses to creative writing tasks.
My approach is to think long term. While exam success is important, fostering a love of writing, enjoyment in the creative process and confidence in self-expression is what supports future progress. When someone begins to feel more at ease with their ideas and willing to engage, that growth often extends beyond writing into many other areas of learning and communication.
